Adoption Process

Thank you for considering adopting a Labrador Retriever. Lab Rescue of LRCP, Inc., is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that rescues and places abandoned Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retriever-Labrador Retriever mixes. We are active in the entire Washington, D.C., metro area.

We usually have between thirty and sixty dogs waiting for adoption at any time of all ages and colors and both sexes. Please plan to visit a range of dogs to find the best one for your family. If age and health permit, we spay and neuter all dogs prior to adoption. Some of the dogs we take in require extensive medical care. To cover our vet bills and related expenses, we require a $250.00 nonrefundable adoption fee. For any dog six years of age or older, the fee is $200.00. All puppies four months old and younger are $300 plus $50 spay/neuter deposit. We accept cash, personal checks, Master Card, Visa and Discover. Like local animal shelters, we perform a house check.

Please click here for the Adoption Application to give us information about you and the kind of dog you wish to adopt. You may fill out and submit our application online or print it out and then fax or mail it. Lab Rescue does not have any absolute requirements to adopt a dog, but keep in mind, all Lab Rescue dogs must be spayed or neutered. (This is usually done prior to adoption, but in the event that a dog has not been altered at the time of adoption, there is a $50 spay/neuter deposit due in addition to the adoption fee. The spay/neuter deposit is refundable after the adopter provides Lab Rescue with the spay/neuter certificate from the veterinarian.) Through the information provided on this application, we try to find the best home for each dog and the best dog for each home.

Applications are also available at Table 1 at our Adopt-a-Lab Days.

Please transmit your completed application online (preferred). Alternatively, you may mail it to the address on the form, fax it to 703-852-7077, or bring it to one of our Adopt-a-Lab Days. When printing the application, please only use white paper as colored paper does not copy well or lend itself to further facsimile transmission. If you are mailing an application, please use only white paper, write on only one side, and do not include attachments, such as photographs. You can add as many additional sheets as you wish. We process these as quickly as we can, but you can expect it to take one week to 10 days after we receive your application before somone contacts you. If you would like to be contacted sooner, please either fax your application or file it online.

Please note that submitting your application is only the first step in adopting a Lab. After we receive your application, you will be contacted by an Adoption Coordinator for an interview. You can expect it to take up to two weeks for someone to contact you after receipt of your application. After we review the applications, we must then distribute them to our volunteer Adoption Coordinators. If you do not hear from us within the expected time frame, please e-mail info@lab-rescue.org with your name, the date you submitted your application, and by what means (online, fax, mail) you submitted your application. We thank you for your patience.

If you plan to attend an Adopt-a-Lab Day and have already been contacted by an adoption coordinator, please let her know of your plan to attend. If you have submitted an application but have not been contacted by an adoption coordinator, please bring a copy of your application with you to the event. Please remember that all household members, human and canine, must be present at our adoption events in order for interviews and visits with dogs to proceed.
